Abstract

Indians in Malaysia are a minority group. They were brought to Malaysia as immigrants during the late 19th century and early 20th century. They were brought to work on rubber, coffee and sugar plantations. At the same time, some Indians were also working as laborer's on railway tracks, roads and telecommunication systems. Actually, Indians brought wealth to the British. After Malaysia became independent, there was no drastic socio-economic change for the Indians. This is evident now as Indian control over the economy is unimpressive, rather slow and undramatic compared to the progress of the Malays and Chinese. The Indian political party, MIC, was founded in 1946. Its main aims were to see the welfare and strengthen their political power in Malaysia. The MlC only helped to improve the socio-economic condition of Indians with the birth of NFLCS. After that the MIC created many cooperative companies to improve the socio-economic situation of the Indians. But, these cooperative companies like NESA, KPJ and Maika Holdings become paternalistic in manner and have avoided mobilizing the Indian community in any real sense of word. This is because these cooperative companies were dominated by some powerful leaders in the MIC. They were plagued by incessant political and factional in fighting at all levels.
