Abstract
The aim of this research is to study how far is Mentakab secondary school students' awareness towards Guidance and Counselling Services. A total number of 100 students are involved in this study. They are 50 boys and 50 girls, each comprising of Form 2 and Form 4 students. A survey was conducted on these students. The result shows that on the overall students have moderate awareness towards the Guidance and Counselling service. A large number of students are aware of the existence of the service in school, its need and importance but students have little knowledge about the purpose, objective and activities involved because many of them have not received any information regarding the service. There is also a misconception among these students that the Guidance and Counselling services are an advice giving process. There are no differences in awareness towards Guidance and Counselling among boys and girls but the lower secondary students have greater awareness towards the service in comparison to the upper secondary students. Very few students seem to use the Guidance and Counselling services mainly because students are not aware of and do not have information regarding the service and its activities. The school counsellor is not the main source of help seek by students when they face problems. Students rather seek help from their close friends and mothers when they face problems because of factors such as trust, readiness to give help spontaneously freedom to discuss problems and the helper's ability to understand students' problems. The counsellor is still perceived by students as a helper for problems concerning studies and career guidance but not personal social problems. However among students who had received help from the school counsellor, a large number of them say that the help given to them was effective and the Guidance and Counselling service is helpful.
