Abstract

Sports management has recently made great progress both as a professional occupation and as an academic discipline. There has been an increase in demand for qualified people to manage the sports organizations efficiently at all levels, the professional, the amateur and the recreational levels. In the Malaysian context, sports management is still very much a voluntary and part time occupation. With the national sports teams being constantly under the scrutiny of the media and pressured by the public to develop and maintain a winning tradition, it is vital that sports managers perform all the expected roles and tasks fully and competently. This study attempts to identify the profile of the manager of the Malaysian national sports team in terms of scope of roles and tasks petformed and the level of performance. The scope of the performance was established through literature review, consultation of a panel of experts. and research on the job requirements of the sports managers in the sports associations. From these, five main roles, namely, an administrator, a finance manager, a public relations manager, a leader and a technical and tactical manager, were identified. The profile of the team manager was then determined by the level of their performance on a five point Likert scale in the 15 7 tasks derived from the five main roles.
