Abstract

This research was carried out with the aim to evaluate the implementation of al Azhar curriculum at secondary religious school under Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (JAIS) This research was focused to the ability difference shown between overseas and locally graduated teachers and also to certified and non-certified teachers. A set of questionnaires was created and circulated to 161 teachers from 23 schools. Out of that only 152 teachers responded. Data were then analyzed by using " frequency'' method to get the percentage difference and at the same time ·'chi square' analysis is was used 10 obtain the difference between variables. Result shows that more than 50% of the teachers understand the whole of al Azhar curriculum. However, from teaching technics aspect, it is found out that lectures arc still popular among teachers, beside text books as the main source of teaching. Finding shows that there is a significant difference between overseas and locally graduated teachers in understanding and implementing the teaching of al Azhar curriculum. Result of the research on the overall comprehension of the said curriculum can prove this. Locally graduated teachers with good understanding of the curriculum are only 28.7% compared to overseas graduated teachers with a comprehensive understanding of the curriculum arc 71.3 % On the other hand, result of the ability between certified and non-certified teachers shows no significant difference. Based on the findings, it is therefore suggested that Arabic Language Courses are carried out at every school term holiday in order to increase teachers' knowledge and expertise in implementing al Azhar curriculum. Hence, increase students' performance and achievement in examinations. It is hoped that the idea suggested can overcome weakness faced by teachers in implementing the al Azhar curriculum.
