Abstract

The Malay Linguistics has progressed parallel to the developments of modern linguistic. Therefore, it is fair that the methods of teaching as well as the syllabus of Malay Language of our schools be revised in accordance to such developments. In relation to the above issue, this study has attempted to observe the various methodologies of the teaching of essay writing skills. The syllabus and students' essay products have been carefully studied. Based on the observation, some weaknesses were identified both in the syllabus content as well as in the pedagogical components of the teaching of essay writing skills. It is felt that such shortcomings should be overcome by including the aspects of cohesion, coherence, propositional writing, main idea and topic discussion into the syllabus and the Malay teaching pedagogy. The strength and influence of cohesion, coherence and other components would help expose students to various important aspects of essay writing skills as well as guide them to produce good essays. Furthermore, these aspects also would help develop quality writing styles in our students. Based on the strengths and influence of the above aspects of writing skills, this study suggests that these aspects to be taken and accepted as new perspective criteria in the teaching of Malay language especially in the field of essay writing skill.
