Abstract

Malay Reservation land (MRL) was introduced in t he Malaya during the British administration. The first Malay Reservation Land Enactment was enacted in 1913. The main objective of the reservation was to protect Malay lands from falling into the hands of non-Malay. However, because of the rapid development and urbanisation, the existence of MRL located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur was left backward from development. The main characteristic of these area was only a medium Malay housing area. Kampung Dato' Keramat strategically MRL area located after Kampung Baru facing the same fate. These MRL was identify by various housing types from a traditional Malay houses to a modern types of houses such as bungalow, double-storeys and terraces. The housing structure was built from wood and stone. One of the obvious features in the housing aspects here was a transformation phenomena which have been carried out mainly at the 'RIDA' houses. These transformation phenomena had a positive and negative effects. The process not only contribute to a better living environment, but it is also intrude the drainage system. The survey showed that Kampung Dato' Keramat has a big potential area to be develop as a modern housing area. Without proper planning and attend ion these area will be left backward from modern development. To develop these area as a modern housing area will requires involvement from many parties such as landowner, state government, planner and etc. Without these co-operation and commitment the Malays cannot gain maximum benefit from their land ownership.
