Abstract

Secularism as an ideology has long affected Islamic civilization. It is defined as separating the worldly life from religion leaving negative impact on muslims especially and men generally for they are not bound to follow religious authority. This dissertation will look at how the idea of secularism started in the West, beginning with the Renaissance to Enlightenment leading subsequently to many European revolutions which emphasize on rationality in problem solving rather than following the Church order. This form of secularism was then adapted and practived by the muslim countries and communities. The author starts this dissertation by outlining the research scope, objectives, methodology and writing scheme. Various definations are given from deferrent perspectives in Chapter One. It includes Western and Islamic perspective, literal, philosophical and historical context of secularism. Chapter Two describes the birth of the concept of secularism, its schools of thought and adaptions in life. Chapter three spesifically discusses secularism and muslim community, the perspective and the adaptation taking Turkey as an example. Chapter Four represents the most important part, involving a discussion of the impact of secularism on muslim civilization, which includes social, economic. political and intellectual dimensions and practices in Malaysia. The author concludes this dissertation with personal observation from research done in Chapter Five.
