Abstract

This project seeks to find out the factors which have influenced students in their choice of a private higher education institution in Petaling Jaya. A questionnaire was administered to 71 students of the Foundation Programme in the selected institution. It secured a total response rate of 100%. The questionnaire was divided into two parts. Part One obtained the demographic characteristics of the respondents while Part Two established the level of influence each of the factors has on the respondents' choice of the college. Six areas of influence with a total of 34 questions guided the questionnaire design. The areas included are: course information, reputation of the college, location, facilities, sports activities and financial considerations. The responses received indicated that all the factors listed in the questionnaire have influence majority of respondents in varying degrees from very strong influence to slight influence. However, in every question, there were also responses, which indicated that these factors do not have any influence on their choice of the institution. Overall, the responses indicated that the respondents would like to have information on the courses offered by the college. Furthermore, it appears that the respondents regard the recommendation of their friends currently studying in the college as important. The results indicated that for every two respondents. one of them has been influenced by their friend's recommendation albeit in varying degrees. The survey results also revealed that the respondents are generally interested in the availability and accessibility to computers and library facilities. The respondents do not appear to be highly influenced with additional features like state-of-the art computers and special privileges such as access to overseas partner universities libraries. Lastly, the results of the survey also highlighted the importance of location of the college, cost and sports facilities in influencing the respondents' decision in the choice of the college.
