Abstract
Twenty-six species of Pandanus are reported in recent collections from Madagascar made by J.-L. Guillaumet, of which three are proposed as new (Pandanus princeps B. C. Stone, Pandanus guillaumetii B. C. Stone, Pandanus pichi-sermollii B. C. Stone). One species, Pandanus bathiei Martelli, is reduced to synonymy with P. sparganioides Baker. The rediscovery of P. freycinetioides (Gaud.) Kurz at last makes clear the nature of the genus Souleyetia Gaud., which included only S. freycinetioides Gaud., and which was reduced to a generic section of Pandanus by Kurz. The supposed multiovulate condition diagnostic of this genus is not supported by the new collection and from this and other lines of evidence it is believed that the tri-ovulate condition emphasized by Gaudichaud is only an abnormal feature in a genus normally monoovulate. The section SOULEYETIA (Gaud.) Kurz is shown to be a prior name for Sect. SUSSEA Warb. Tentative keys for the Madagascar species are provided within each section. A phytogeographic map of the island and a map showing collection localities are included. Illustrations of all the newly proposed species, and of several of the others, are presented. © 1970 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
