Abstract

Tantalum aluminum carbide (Ta2AlC)/arc-shaped fiber-based saturable absorber (SA) was utilized to induce mode-locked pulses in a thulium-holmium doped fiber (THDF) laser. A soliton mode-locked laser was observed at a threshold pump power of 120 mW with the wavelength centered at 1915 nm, 3-dB spectral bandwidth of 3.0 nm, and pulse width of 1.36 ps. The generated laser exhibits output power and pulse energy of 1.75 mW and 0.14 nJ, respectively. A high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) value of more than 55 dB was achieved. These experimental results have proved the potential of Ta2AlC MAX Phase as an SA material that can find application in ultrafast photonics.
