Abstract

Due to the high carbon footprint of cement manufacturing, extensive efforts have been devoted to produce low carbon cements. One of the most explored methods is adopting supplementary cementitious materials (SCM). Thus, this study deals with the use of locally available calcined clays (kaolin clay and brown clay) in Malaysia and limestone powder for an eco-friendlier ternary blended cement. The low carbon cement is produced by varying the cement replacement level at 15, 30, 45, and 60, with the calcined clay: limestone ratio of 2:1. The consistency, rheology, compressive strength, and microstructural (SEM and TGA/DSC) properties of the low carbon cements were investigated. The calcined kaolin clay was found to have the better potential for reaction in the ternary blended cement system. In overall, it is demonstrated that up to 30 of cement can be replaced by the combination of calcined kaolin clay-limestone powder, where the compressive strengths exceeded those of 100 cement after 7 and 28 days, better pozzolanic reactivity, as well as exhibiting improved microstructure. © Fédération Internationale du Béton – International Federation for Structural Concrete.
