Abstract

This paper presents a review of research on musical instrument classification which employed the machine learning system. The two main steps in the automatic classification task are discussed: feature extraction and classification. The musical instrument classification follows the Hornbostel-Sachs system. In the feature extraction, the relevant features that are commonly used in the literature are listed and organized in a taxonomy which is divided according to the domain of computation. Different classification techniques that are widely used by the researchers are also presented and reviewed. © 2022, Canadian Acoustical Association. All rights reserved.
