Abstract

This work demonstrates the generation of a Q-switched laser in a neodymium-doped fiber laser (NDFL) cavity incorporated erbium oxide as a saturable absorber. NDFL pumped with 808 nm laser diode generated Q-switched pulses at the operating wavelength of 1088 nm without any filter due to a strong Nd3+ transition from 4F5/2 to 4I11/2 energy level. The pulsed laser exhibits stable Q-switching behavior within the pump power of 167.04-205.28 mW with the shortest pulse width of 2.41 mu s. As the pump power adjusted in the same range, the repetition rate varied between 34.18 kHz to 41.72 kHz. The signal-to-noise ratio of 55.39 dB from the radio frequency analyzer indicates these pulses operate in a highly stable manner. In the authors' knowledge, this is the first demonstration of Q-switched NDFL utilizing erbium-oxide as SA device.
