Constructed fear of poverty:The power of identity and the identity of power among youths

Abstract
While discussing youth, less attention is paid to their fear towards the issue of poverty and how thisfear could affect their identity formation. Thispaper aims to outline how urban youth constructtheir fear of poverty and how this issue is affectingtheir identity formation. The research wasconducted using both the quantitative andqualitative designs. 720 respondents were involvedin the survey. 30 of these respondents were chosento be involved in three Focus Group Discussionsessions. This study demonstrated that youth’s ideaof fear is based on real situations and the ‘possiblefear’ is to avoid this threat in the first place. Theresults identified that economic situation is themain contributing factor for one to be in povertyfollowed by the lack of education, lack ofgovernmental support and lack of societal support.Finally, this study shows that by identifying thisfear, it is hoped that the youths will have strongerconfidence in their identity and self in relation tothe current world context © 2021, Global Journal Al-Thaqafah.
