Abstract

This descriptive study was conducted within the framework of radical constructivism. The purpose of the study was to identify strengths and weaknesses of literature reviews done by postgraduate students in the field of mathematics education at the Faculty of Education, University of Malaya, as part of a thesis, dissertation or research report, and to formulate a general guideline for conducting a literature review based on the above analysis. Three procedures were used to collect data, namely document analysis, questionnaires, and interviews. Overall, students seemed to be aware of the main purpose of a literature review. However, some of them used information from secondary source literature, but reported it as primary source literature. Most students relied less on local materials because of difficulties in locating them. Some of their literature reviews were nothing more than reports of what other people have done or said. Most students did not critically evaluate the literature selected. The majority stated that a good literature review should not merely report the related literature, but also evaluate, organize, and synthesize what others have done. However there was a gap between their beliefs and their actual behaviors.
