Abstract
Research on employee commitment continues to be popular despite early reports of the non-significant and at best, moderate correlations between global organizational commitment and performance. The inclusion of the motives and foci of employee commitment in commitment-performance studies have revealed more statistically significant relationships between the two constructs. This paper provides an overview of the different motives and domains or targets of employee commitment and highlights the importance of using affective rather than performative or continuance commitment measures in research. In addition, it discusses the weaknesses in rising the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ) as a measure of organizational commitment.
