Abstract
This dissertation entitled Philosophy of Education According To Ibn Khaldūn and John Dewey : Comparison Study is focused on education concept, aim and methodology used by them to driven and to carry out education activities. It interpretes the thoughts by these two personalities to determain the similarities and differences of education thought by Ibn Khaldūn who represent the Islamic world and Dewey from the Western. This study uses the documentation method to gather data while data analysis are done through inductive, deductive and comparative methods. The dessertation consists five main parts and introduction is the first part. The second part describes the biodata of the two personalities involved and thier thoughts in other fields. The third part explains the education thought by Ibn Khaldūn which narrowed down to concept, aim, education methodology and aspects related to education. The fourth part discusses John Dewey’s education thought from the same aspects. This study is ended with analysis and comparison of both education thoughts by Ibn Khaldūn and Dewey. This study proved that the education philosophy and thoughts by Ibn Khaldūn are uniformed with the Islamic education thought. The philosophy are based on evidence from Al-Quran and from the Prophet’s Sunnah. According to Ibn Khaldun, education is not merely a proccess to import or to absorb knowledge. It is also a proccess of instilling moral values and knowledge which involve spiritual and physical human development with aims to produce pious individuals who submit to Allah in order to gain success in the world and after life. Meanwhile, Dewey’s education thought of education are based on the philosophy of pragmatism which emphasised experience as the source of knowledge and thoughs. Dewey thinks education is the proccess of social survival, changeable and develop with times in order to produce good citizen and useful to the society. Through the democracy of education introduced by Dewey, all human disregard of thier races, skin colours, origins and religions must be provided with adequate experience to survive in this world.
