Abstract
This is a study on the variation at utterances of residents in Kampung Surau Panjang and Kampung Atas Tol in Mukim Pengadang Buluh, located in Daerah Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, and effects of social interaction on the sound change of their utterances using comparative approach. It is found that final vowel phoneme /a/ in Terengganu dialect (or /au/ in Standard Malay) corresponds with /ɔ/ in Kampung Surau Panjang and /a/ in Kampung Atas Tol. The difference can be attributed to social interaction from the aspects of age, education and economic status of respondents. Sound shift was observed to be predominant in Kampung Surau Panjang, 34.38% in the middle age group and 68.75% in youths, in Kampung Atas Tol 28.12% and 43.75% respectively. The shift also occur within the educated groups in both villages with 75% in Kampung Surau Panjang and 34.38% in Kampung Atas Tol, and within the higher income groups with 71.88% in Kampung Surau Panjang and 37.50% in Kampung Atas Tol. Variation in utterances and sound shift or change which happened in the two villages which are located in the same mukim can be attributed to the influence of neighbouring sub dialects i.e. Kuala Terengganu and Hulu Terengganu.
