Abstract

Modern Mahua literature refers to the literature written in Chinese by writers in Malaysia. It appeared in 1919 and since then, this literature has developed for more than eighty years. However, due to limitations of language and translation, many who do not know the Chinese language never have the opportunity to appreciate modern Mahua literature. This dissertation is an effort to investigate modern Mahua literature. It is hoped that with this research the national literature of Malaysia would be further enriched, and a new form of literature be established in the country. This study compares the novels of two modern Mahua writers: Fang Beifang (1918) and Wei Yun li (1913-1996). In the study, the effort of these two writers are duly acknowledged for their initiative in developing modern Mahua literature and their contribution in modern Mahua literary criticism.
