Abstract
In Islamic history, wakaf institution plays a viral role in building strong Islamic economy. However, lately wakaf institution is not being seen anymore as an institution that can solve economic problems of the Muslim society. This is due to unprofessional handling of wakaf properties where a lot of wakaf lands are being left undeveloped even though they are in a very strategic area. From the above statements, this dissertation will look in detail at the wakaf system in Islamic law as being provided in the al-Quran and Hadith and also from fiqh literature. This research also focuses on organisation and administrative structure and strategic programs which have been undertaken by Majlis Agama Islam of Malacca. In addition, procedures of wakaf is also discussed. In order to gather information on the ground questionnaires have been given to individuals who are directly involved with wakaf institution. In addition, this research presents a few proposals of which proactive measures could be taken by the parties concerned in order to improve the administration and development of wakaf institution as a symbol of economic strength of Muslim commmunity in Malacca.
