Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyse and determine the language resources that are used to produce Malay essays as required by the local assessment examinations. Essay writing skill is vital for students who are sitting for these examinations. Although such a skill is important students are often left on their own to figure out what resources are available and the ways to use them in order to produce an essay which belongs to the expository genre. The theoretical framework used in this researchs need to fulfil two major requirements. First the theory needs to link the concept of genre with language resources that realise it. Then, it must possess also a comprehensive grammatical description. These characteristics are found in the theory of systemic functional linguistics. Through the analyses of discourse semantics and lexicogrammar, language resources that realise an exposition are determined. Certain linguistic resources have been utilised to form expository generic structure via three dimensions of meanings. The knowledge of these language resources could benefit students who are learning to write the expository genre.
