Abstract

The primary aim of this research is to discuss the communicative behaviour of the local Chinese ( Peranakan Chinese) in Tanah Merah Kelantan. Two aspects embodied in this research are code-switching and code-mixing. This research is also presented because of a few reasons. Firstly, it is aimed to see which types of communicative behaviour occurs more frequently in this community. Secondly, to see the frequency between social variables (sex , age and education) and communicative behaviour. Thirdly, this attempt is also made to see the language choice or type of linguistic code of the informants. The second chapter exposes a few findings which are made by several linguists both locally and abroad. They include Braj K. Kachru, Pairat Warie, Suzanne Ramaine, Gumpers, Asmah Haji Omar, Nik Safiah Karim, Ramli Salleh etc. Their findings in codeswitching and code-mixing are discussed briefly. The third chapter discusses the research methodology widely. The primary concern of this chapter is about research design such as ways of collecting data, types of data, sources of data, the samples, instrumentation and how the data is analyzed. Meanwhile the fourth chapter discusses in length the findings of Communicative behaviour of the informants. These include code-switching , code-mixing, the role of social variables in communicative behaviour, language choice, and type of linguistic code used in this community. The last chapter summarises the findings of communicative behaviour among Chinese Peranakan in Tanah Merah. The writer also made a few suggestions as a guide line for other researchers to do further research especially in minority ethnics in Kelantan.
