Abstract

The achievement and glory of Malay women of high rank have been recorded in history and has a profound impact to our society today. Great respect was shown for their charisma and capability. Women's increasing participation in politics is widely acknowledged but there is little recognition that the changes are far more comprehensive than that. Women still occupy an inferior positions in politics. Thus, this thesis will deal with three main hypotheses that are; firstly, there is a gender discrimination in politics to an extent that it hinders the active participation of women in general. Secondly, the non-equality in gender relations creates a significant difference between the number of males and females at the leadership posts. Finally, UMNO women have by far succeeded in politics than their PAS counterparts in terms of having a positive attitude towards politics and their potentials of being choose to the decision making level. These hypothesis will be the core of th.is research. This research will try to investigate and present a plausible explanation to gender discrimination in the Malay politics. It will focus on women in both UMNO and PAS and will examine their roles and participation in politics. Evidence from this study shows that the view of society and Malay culture are still regarded as important elements in shaping the role, positions and involvement of women in the politics of Malay society in Malaysia. The view of society towards the contribution made by each sex group has led to gender differences and these attitudes involve deeply held beliefs and perceptions about women's place and women's capacities. Even though there are women who holding high administrative positions in politics today and while this is an achievement, the number of women in such positions is still small. The party's leaders still see women in a supportive role. Women in PAS are not encouraged to hold or lead important position in politics or within the party's structure itself. However, women in UMNO play a more active role. They have a better chance to be elected as electoral candidate thus more opportunity to serve at the decision making level. Their position in politics is far better than their PAS counterparts in terms of being chosen at the leadership level.
