Abstract

This research is aimed at studying H.Munawir Sjadzali's concept of his interpretation on inheritance (Mawarith) verses, especially verse 11 of surah al-Nisa' which was compiled in his article entitled: "Reaktualisasi Ajaran Islam" (towards re-actualization of Islamic Teachings). The article was published in a few books for examples , in the book edited by Drs. Iqbal Abdurrauf Saimima entitled: "Polemik Reaktualisasi Ajaran Islam" (Polemic on the re-actualization of Islamic Teachings), “Kontekstualisasi Ajaran Islam 70 Tahun Prof. Dr. H. Munawir Sjadzali. MA” (Contextualisation of Islamic Teachings, 70 years Prof. Dr. H. Munawir Sjadzali MA) by Team Editor Muhamad Wahyuni Nafis and the others, and “Islam: Realitas Baru Dan Orientasi Masa Depan Bangsa” (Islam: The New Reality and Orientation of the future of the nation) by H. Munawir Sjadzali. There are few objectives to be achieved from this study. Among others, H.Munawir Sjadzali's prominence in Indonesia and his influence, his understanding and interpretation of the „Mawarith‟ verses, in particular, verse 11 of surah Al-Nisa', the method used in his interpretations compared to the previous Qur'anic interpreters (Mufasir), and his commentaries and views towards the issues in question. For that purpose, this research is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the preface which includes introduction to the study, the second chapter explains the laws of inheritance, the third chapter introduces the profile and biography of H.Munawir Sjadzali and his influence in Indonesia, the fourth chapter reveals his methodology of interpretation on verse 11 surah Al-Nisa' and the analysis on his points, and the fifth chapter is the conclusion. The study has achieved several findings on H.Munawir Sjadzali's prominence as a thinker and Muslim intellect who has great interest in the field of Qur'anic interpretation and great influence in the development of Islam in Indonesia. The researcher finds that H.Munawir Sjadzali's interpretation on verse 11 of surah Al-Nisa' focused more on the spirit of Islamic teachings of the Qur'an rather than the textual parts of the Qur'an. He also focused more on freedom in expressing the ideas objectively although this may be contradictory to the ideas of the previous scholars. Lastly, through this study, the researcher is of the opinion that H.Munawir Sjadzali is considered among those utilized the concept of liberal thought.
