Abstract

This paper examines the Muslim community’s perception in Kubang Pasu district, Kedah Darul Aman on the issue pertaining to numerous performance of umrah (minor hajj or minor pilgrimage to Mecca) in preference to sadaqah (charity deeds). This is due to the persistence of such phenomena in the Muslim community who would favour and lavishly spend their wealth for the sake of personal interest by recurring the performance of umrah, as compared to the sadaqah deeds which involve public interest as ordained in Islam. The Muslims perception on this particular issue is analyzed from their levels of understanding, their occupation of knowledge pertaining this issue, and their practice of such devotional acts of umrah and sadaqah. This paper observes the revealed Quranic and Hadith authorities regarding umrah and sadaqah, the juristic opinions of Muslim scholars and the legal preferences between umrah and sadaqah as well as to study the understanding of Muslims with regards to the issue. The research methodology of this paper is based on the qualitative-library research and the quantitative-survey research. The former involves the study of legal authorities, juristic views of classical and contemporary scholars, while the latter imports surveys and questionnaires. 30 sets of questions are distributed to 301 respondents representing the Kubang Pasu population for the purpose of the survey. The finding of the research reveals that the majority of the Kubang Pasu population is aware that sadaqah stands significantly recommended as compared to the numerous performance of umrah. The study also observes that the understanding of the said Muslim community is, in accordance with syari’ah and the current demand.
