Abstract

The study aims to identify: (i) the level of ‘ibadah awareness among students (ii) the extent of self, parents, Islamic Education teachers, religious programs in school, the environment and friends influencing ‘ibadah awareness (iii) whether there are differences in the level of ‘ibadah awareness between genders, achievement in Islamic Education, interest in Islamic Education and socio-economic status (iv) whether there is any relationship between ‘ibadah awareness and the student life style. ‘Ibadah in this study refers to the specific compulsory practices and the sunat that is solat (fardu and sunat), recitation of the al-Quran, zikr and prayers. The respondents were 450 form four students from nine selected national secondary schools in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, consisting of 230 male and 220 female students. The data were mainly gathered by a questionnaire administered on the sample, however, interviews and observation were also used as complementary techniques. The study generally indicates that the level of awareness of ‘ibadah whether compulsory or sunat, is unsatisfactory among the respondents. The research also shows that parents play an important role in encouraging the practices of ‘ibadah among students. The role of friends, on the other hand, is negligible whereby the mean for peer scores was the lowest at 2.53 compared to other factors. The study also discovers that ‘ibadah awareness is minimally influenced by gender differences, interest in Islamic Education and socio-economic background. However, it reveals that achievement in Islamic Education does influenced ‘ibadah awareness whereby high achievers are more committed in performing their ‘ibadah. The study also shows that awareness of ‘ibadah nurtures high moral values among the students. As parents have a strong influence in encouraging ‘ibadah practices among their children, they should become good role models for their children. Negligence and ignorance of parents responsibilities will result in their children neglecting ‘ibadah practices.
