Abstract
The celebration of maulidur rasul has long been practised by Muslims in Malaysia although it is not associated with acts of His companions, tabi‘in and muslim scholars in the past. However, some groups claim that celebrating the maulidur rasul is related to bid‘ah and this caused a prolonged emergence of polemic among Muslims up till now. Each of them has respectively used his own arguments based on the understanding brought by a particular group. This scenario requires a specific research involving the use of special instruments contained in the usul al-fiqh, that is, maslahah, as the real justification in assessing whether the maulidur rasul celebration differs with the legislation requirements. Through this study, a few contrasting views on maulidur rasul celebration are taken into account to analyze the issue in depth. Hence, an attempt to understand the knowledge on maslahah in usul al-fiqh is applied to evaluate the real answer in celebrating maulidur rasul. The methodology of this study uses library research in collecting the relevant data. Next, analyzing data is made through inductive, deductive and comparative methods. However, after an in-depth analysis of this issue, there is no clear evidence that prohibits the celebration of maulidur rasul. In fact, there is evidence that approves this kind of celebration. This study shows bid‘ah dalalah that is based on the maulidur rasul celebration by certain parties, is clearly not based on an evident legal methodology. Thus, the necessity to celebrate maulidur rasul can be associated with maslahah mursalah.
